Thank You for your support in 2011!

Dear Friends,

As 2011 comes to a close we want to thank everyone who is supporting us at MannaWorks. When a local non-profit director says, “I couldn’t have gotten through this past year without MannaWorks,” she is also saying, “Thank You” to you.

Because donations to area non-profits have decreased due to the economy, and the number of people that they have to help has increased,  it makes MannaWorks’ goal of helping them save money even more important.  Every bit of money we can save a non-profit allows them to be able to help more of the people Jesus called “the least of these”.  This past year we were able to help over 50 different non-profits and have saved them 48% off of what they would have paid for upkeep and repair projects on their buildings if they had not used MannaWorks.

God also allowed us to start the MannaWorks Works Program.  Our Works Program is for chronically unemployable men who others won’t hire because of their past problems, often involving drugs and prison.  Because of this, they wound up homeless, living on the streets and draining social services.

CB at scaffoldC.B. is one of these men.  He started with MannaWorks in June.  At that time he was living in a public park underneath a jungle gym.  He had burned his relationships with his siblings, was about to be thrown back into jail for not paying child support, had not seen his kids in a long while and didn’t have any chance of employment due to his anger.  Well, it has been about seven months since C.B. entered the Works Program and things have changed.  He has somewhere to live, has caught up on his child support, gets invited to church and Sunday dinner by his sisters and even has time with his kids on the weekends.  C.B. is definitely on the road to becoming a productive member of society again.

We feel that God has given MannaWorks a unique opportunity because we have the work projects and we need workers.  We call it on-the-job life training.  Most of these men can do almost any kind of work they want; they just have to learn how to keep a job once they have it.  Our goal for these men is for them to get back to being productive members of society again, and our hope is to bring even more men off of the streets next year.

Kevin with C.B.

2011 has been a great year for MannaWorks.  We could not have done it without your prayers and financial support.  It’s your generosity that allows us to make a difference helping “the least of these”.  Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  We believe that we are doing what God planned in advance for us to do, and that you are a part of that.

As you consider your year-end giving we ask that you remember MannaWorks.  Every donation that we receive goes to helping the non-profits to help more people and to pull more guys off of the streets and into the Works Program.

Thank You,

Roy Karr

A State of the Union address for Mannaworks

MannaWorks is still going strong, thanks to God.  We pick up new clients almost every week including Christian Women’s Job Corps, Kids and Company, Meals and Wheels and World Hunger Relief just to name a few.  It seems like Kevin is always running somewhere to help somebody.

We have always believed that MannaWorks was God’s idea and that we are just along for the ride.   Even so, it looks very different than how we imagined it would two years ago. You already know about our work to improve conditions at nearby non-profits; it’s the main reason we were formed.

As MannaWorks has matured we believe God has shown us the value of finding work for the homeless who have a track record which keeps them from being hired by regular employers. What they need is consistent mileage working for someone who can describe them as reliable and dependable over a longer period of time.  We believe that MannaWorks is in a unique position to do this; we have the projects and we can use workers.  Our prayer is to help these men change their lives while we all work together to help the non-profits. A reminder from the kids

A week ago we had the pleasure of working with a group of college kids from the University of Northern Colorado. These kids were here spending their spring break going through Mission Waco’s poverty simulation and helping MannaWorks with projects at the Ark and Meyer Center for Mission Waco. They did a tremendous job. It was great to get to know them over the week.
Each one of them had their own reasons for coming on the spring break trip but the underlying theme was they wanted to try to help the people that Jesus helped. Continue reading

February Mind of Roy

The Mind of Roy

I was listening to a pastor this week who told a story about how in 2001 the City Manager of Waco called him wanting to know if he could use their church for a meeting. The man wanted to invite as many church leaders as possible and ask them why they don’t do more to help the people who need help in the city. Here is this City Manager looking at the plight of things in Waco saying, “Well, why don’t the people who profess to be Christians do what they are supposed to do and help more of the the people that Jesus helped?” He believed that the city could be transformed if we Christians actually do what the Bible says.

I started thinking about what that City Manager said. Continue reading

Reprint of Roy’s December 2010 Letter

Friends:

Roy Speaks

As 2010 comes to a close I look back over this last year and I am amazed that it has been a year already since we started this ministry called Mannaworks. In a time when many non-profits are struggling to keep going due to negative effects of the economy on their contributions, God has seen fit to keep Mannaworks around. Because the economy has affected so many non-profits Mannaworks has been called on even more to stretch what little money these non-profits have for their facilities. We have had the pleasure to help over 40 different non-profits, saving these organizations hundreds of thousands of dollars that they can then use to help the “least of these” instead of spending it on their buildings.

Sure, we have been able to help the nonprofits like we wanted to, but what I have been amazed about the most is what God has taught us along the way. Continue reading
